I moved 8 times in the past year- i think I am finally settled. anyway 2 years ago I had a home land line with Verizon obviously when I moved I disconnected the day before and all my bills were current. Verizon kept sending me bills as if I still had the phone even though it was disconnected. i wrote them , called and gave up. Now 2 yrs later I got a letter from a collection agency saying I owe close to 400.00 with dates I was not Even living in the address provided. I said please mail me proof they sent me copies of all the bills but none of which were paid. I had a rough 2yrs , my stuff was in storage for a year and i have no clue to where the checks are. some bills my church paid some my mother who died paid. How do i get out of this without a lawyer> ? i am unemployed adn struggling to pay what bills I do have. no nasty answers just people who ever encountered this or people who may know. I am in New York. Thanks

A friend of mine went through a similar situation with Verizon. What he did was document all his conversations with Verizon and summarize everything in formal complain letter(s) to the FCC. It is not going to be easy, but if you are resilient enough you might be able to win. It took my friend months but he got refund of about $2k after months of fighting. He actually got MORE money than what he was trying to fight for. Perhaps you can even get some money if the FCC concludes that Verizon somehow broke some laws. I would also look into complaining to the FTC that they violated collection laws. Good Luck.
