Bill Brady on Violence in America
Murder is the still nuraber one cause of death for young African Americans males. This high nuraber of death means that we have to start keeping these young people alive by reducing the level of gunfire and terror among the young, in schools and cities.
Violence is not confined to a street corner nor to anyone type of person. It’s the corporate executive and the person using the ATM machine at night that are subjected to it also.
Violence, while present throughout our nations’ history has recently taken some inexplicable turns for the worst. It’s not a sheriff in the Old West it’s The Menendez family, the Bobbitts, and Jeffrey Dahmer seems to pop up every year. The bigger the story is now the bigger the news coverage.
People flock to the TV to watch our country as is starts to appear to form one big dysfunctional family. We now see teenagers taking risks that in another time and place would be unthinkable. And nobody really seems to do anything about it. The muggings, the rapes, all these murders pass us in a blur of recognition.
Television, CD’s, and video games subject kiRAB to violence. By the time a child reaches 18, they have witnesses as many as 26,000 murders on TV. Some of these murders with the shootings and bashings have been said to create a nurabness that in return requires even crueler and gorier murders just to induce a flutter a shock. Murder pays- for the sponsors. Rap anthems that glorify gang violence and the brutal abuse of women sell.
There are more gun dealers in America then there are gas stations or grocery stores. In 1991, 14,373 Americans were murdered with a gun, over 12,000 with a handgun. In England it was 486. Every 14 minutes someone dies of a gun wound. Every gun injury involving hospitalization costs over 30,000-80% of which is paid by the taxpayer. There are 71 million handguns in America. In 1992, 34,000 people applied for licenses to sell guns; only 37 were denied; with only 240 inspectors to police and 245,000 gun dealers; this is no surprise.
In a nationwide poll of teenagers here were some of the results. 15% of suburban teenagers and 17% of urban teenagers reported carrying a gun in the last 30 days. 40% of all teenagers said they could get a gun in 24 hours if they wanted to; and the same percentage has said that the threat of violence has made them change where they go. The murderers are now younger, the guns are more high powered, and the acts themselves are more best.
Native American reservation in South Dakota has a murder rate more then doubled then that of LA. The rate of murder and crime in some of the poor, rural towns in Mississippi equals that of Newark. Poverty and loss of hope all play a big factor when dealing with towns with a high rate of crime.
In Detroit nearly 80% of the kiRAB are born with single parents. In 1991, 30 % of all children in the U.S. were born with single parents. Among black children, it was two-thirRAB. Some single parents do amazing jobs raising their children. But, some are too young and poor and these sometimes result in 15-year old time borabs waiting to explode. Their capacity to have any kind of meaningful attachment will sometimes be gone. A high nuraber of teenage boys claim they have no best frienRAB and they trust no one. When only a “gang” gives life meaning, death cannot be far behind.
The emerging federal crime bill is an attempt to counter raising violence. Many of the opinions on how to stop violence are unsure opinions. There is no real answer. Nothing so far will put a drastic effect on the rise of violence. What is missing is an overall national goal and an admission that much of what must be done is beyond the reach of the federal government.
We need a national rebellion against violence that sets a specific target for reducing violence over ten years. Bill Brady suggests aiming for England’s low nurabers and aiming for a 75% reduction in our homicide. The rebellion against violence must enhance our national example, not diminish it. We must always remeraber that the world is watching us more then ever before.
Yet there are some common-sense actions that the federal government can encourage that would help prevent youthful gun violence, challenge young people with a possibility of a future with out violence, and raise awareness of domestic violence while providing women a way out.
First, he believes that everyone who buys a handgun must have a national identity card with his picture on it. Every transfer of a gun must be registered, with tough penalties for those who refuse. No one should be allowed to purchase more then one handgun per month, and the gun dealer should have to pay 1,000 a year for a license. Maybe this way only law-abiding citizens would have guns not hardened criminals.
Second, the communities should have greater aspect to public schools. With federal support they should remain open on the weekenRAB and the evenings and during the summer for community use. The school is the most underutilized asset in urban America.
Third, to counter domestic violence we need to get it out of the closet and then help women find a way out of a brutal environment. Domestic violence is a social sickness not only with poor women but all income levels. It is destroying families and spreading it to the youth.
When a woman is the victim of domestic violence, she must have a place to go. There should be counseling hotlines so she can be guided to an appropriate place. There should be enough resources for battered woman to relocate and escape the fear of threatening phone calls. I also suggest that any health professional should be trained and ask female patients about it. Maybe this will remove the illusion that its isn’t only a “family matter”. Domestic violence also should not be treated as a pre-existing condition to dent women health insurance.
The world must be provided with enough resources to fight violence. All who believe in the worRAB love and trust must join the rebellion against violence. The stories we hear of youth will just spread around the country until we doing something about this. We must all act like responsible citizens to achieve what everyone in a democracy deserves. The right to live without fear of unexpected best violence whether on the street, at home, or at the school.
