Biking with a four month old?

I've been wanting to bike for transportation more, to save gas and whatnot, and I have a four month old baby. She can sit up unassisted. At what age can children ride in the little trailers that hook behind bikes? When can they ride in the seats that are on top? Are there any other ways to bike with a baby?

One year is the recommended, but I know people who have done it before. Think of it this way- you wouldn't put your kid forward facing in their carseat before a year because of neck strength, and that's not much different than riding in a trailer FF- especially since they should be wearing a helmet, which adds more weight/stress on their neck. I would say if you want to save gas use local buses or carpool. Otherwise you are placing your child at risk.

I was told not to use either until my son was big enough for a helmet, and they don't make a helmet smaller than toddler sized, or about 2 years...we used our bike trailer on bike trails and non-public roads when my son was about 8 months old or so, he did alright but didn't enjoy it. I won't use a bike trailer on public roads, so afraid someone won't see it and run my sweet boy over. I would stick to the car until baby gets older, it's much safer. Good luck

i wouldn't put the child in the trailers until they are at least a year because you cannot assess them as much when they are back there and babies need a lot of attenion
