Biking while trying to tone up.?

I want to start working out, so i can add some shape, and tone up my body. My father is an avid weight lifter so he can get me started on what to do and how to do it. But many people are telling me that biking while trying to build your body wont help. Is this true? Will biking affect the growth of muscles around my body? I do allot of mountain biking, at the least 5-6 hours a week during the warmer months.
