biking question?????

I recently purchased a bike to be a little more active. I used to play soccer and be active in my middle school/ high school years. I am now 21 and i have gained probably about 40 pounds from not eating right, and not being as active as i used to be. I weigh about 160. And I would love to lose 40 lbs.I tried running and changing eating habits, BUT I ended up getting real bad shin splints. Thats why i went with a bike. I find it a little more fun as well. How long should I be riding my bike? How much should I be riding it? Id love to lose weight, and just overall, feel better and I feel like this will help.
