Bike stands

Hi, I'm new here, I just bought a 748 and I thought I'd better find a forum for when I have questions So here is my first question, I just got some new tires because the ones on the bike were pretty worn out, got some Michelin Pilot Power, I was going to get the Pilot Road because I don't have the skill level to fully use the Pilot Power but they were cheaper so I got them.

So anyway here's my question, I'd like to get a set of stands to be able to remove the wheels from the bike so I can change the tires, and for future maintenance as well, but I don't like the idea of paying 300-500$ for a Pitbull or Ducati Performance stand and was wondering if anybody ever made their own stand? I mean they look easy to do... just a few pieces of steel pipes with some brackets for the fork and a pin for the rear axle. I'm sure they could be made for way less than half the price of the Pitbull or Ducati stands...

So if you ever made your own stand, I'd love to see some pics and also if somebody could take some mesurement of the pin for the rear axle that would be great, just the diameter and length of the part that actually goes in the axle. I could probably figure something out by mesuring the size of the hole on the bike but I'm wondering what size the pin is on the commercial stands.

Thanks!

I measured up my DP stand and the 916 axle for you.

I was initially lazy and bought the DP stand for the rear and then made a more elaborate 'lift' for the whole bike and can do front and back with it (see my album) without the DP stand.

I like the DP stand because (again lazy) I lube my chain on the stand idling in first gear. I can do this safely, I believe, because the DP stand pin runs in bearings and the bike leans into the stand. This is important because some guys have had the bike spin off the stand obviously because the bike leans away from the stand. I think because the DP stand is made such that the bike leans into the stand on a level floor. If it doesn't, I'd shim the wheels of the stand (whichever side) to make it so.

Of note is the same size OD of pin and ID of axle (snug fit but not too tight). I think Raptous' stand isn't on bearings and therefore less critical of fit. Your call.

I guess you don't have to make the pin at 'A' = 22mm but could make the pin the same diameter straight through. I'm not sure why they have done that. I would suspect ease of mounting and 22mm or approx 1" is enough for the given purpose.

I think a clone of the Pit bull would be handy because it is reversible and can be used on either side. Handy only if you wish to work on the sprockets 'on stand' but not critical because that can be done on the side stand.

Any questions - give a holla - I'm a sucker for DIY.

**** Assuming the 748 is the same as a 916 *****

Thanks guys!

raptuous: it's a nice stand but a bit long

Brett: Thanks for the measurements and the diagram I really like the lift you made in your gallery as well, if I had more space in the garage I'd love to have something like that.

I made it longer intentionally, I can roll the bike around more safely on the stand, like wheel barrow handles. I thought of making an identical but shorter handled one just for storage but I got this really cool wheel chock for 60 bucks that acts like a chinese finger as the wheel rolls into it, works amazing.
