next time it doesnt start....
Motorcycle Or Scooter / Moped won’t Start Or Stalls once put in gear.
Ok, Relax; let’s start from the beginning;
1)You press the starter button and nothing happens
A)Is key switch on
B)Is kill switch in correct position?
C)Is unit out of gear and/or clutch pulled in (Safety)
D)Is kickstand in right position (Up on some bikes)
If all above is correct, and when you push the button nothing happens, Then;
A)Battery is dead (Check headlight and signals)
B)Main fuse Blown (Check Fuse’s)
C)Starter is bad. Turn key on, Bike in neutral, Use jumper cable from batter pos pole
To stud on starter, does starter turn? yes means starter ok.
d) Starter relay has a thin wire coming from switch to starter relay/solenoid. Either
jump power to this switch to see if relay works, or use a multi meter and check for
power to this wire when switch is pressed. If power applied to this makes solenoid
work then starter and solenoid is good, check switch.
e) check power to/from starter switch. If power isn’t at switch in then main key switch is bad or has loose wire. If power goes to switch but not from switch when depressed, then starter switch is bad.
2) if bike engine turns over but doesn’t catch when starter switch is pressed then;
a) Do you have gas turned on ?
b) is kill switch on, some will allow motor to turn but not allow bike to start if on.
c) Do you have gas
dd) do you have choke on ?
d) is gas getting to carb. Disconnect line at carb, does gas flow out ?
e) Spray a little gas into carb, doe bike fire up for a second, If so and you are getting
gas from fuel line, then float is stuck closed or float needle jet is clogged, take’
apart and clean.
f) ok you’re getting gas, do you have spark ? Pull the spark plugs and make sure their
clean, if they look good, lay the spark plug (With spark plug wire attached) so that
the steel body (Threaded area) of the plug is contacting the steel unpainted engine real
good. Then hit the starter switch, are you getting a good blue spark. If not,
a)start by replacing the plugs,
b) verifying again that the kill switch is off and key switch is on.
c)Verify spark plug and coil wires are good, normally they wouldn’t all go bad at once.
d)The brain box or points depending on age of bike are good. Swap out to test or reset gap.
G) YOU HAVE SPARK, You have fuel……………………………..
If fuel, spark and safeties are all there, then we get down to Air or jets.
A)When you have the plug out, verify that you have compression, air should be blowing out of the spark plug hole when you turned it over (Pressed starter switch)
B)Check that air filter isn’t totally clogged (Rare this would prevent start)
C)At this point, the engine turns, has gas, Has spark but isn’t firing. The actual jets in the carb are probably fowled. To test this, pull a plug out again and squirt a little bit of gas into
The spark plug hole. I would say about 1/3 of a shot glass full. Then put plug back in and try to start the bike, if it kicks over but dies right away. Your carb jets are fowled and you
Will need to clean/rebuild your carbs.
At this point, if none of the above works, a more serious problem has occurred and I suggest you take it to the shop for faster trouble shooting using the appropriate gauges ect.
Hope This helped ! RockBase(DWC)
