Bike Experts Need Help..?

I just purchased my first beach cruiser Micargi 7-speed Rover and it has this Shimano shifter on the bars. Question what the hell is the 1-7 used for? I never owned a bike with Shimano shifters. Can anyone tell me what each number does thanks? Or when I should use a certain number when going up hill, down hill, straight road etc..Thanks!
 
You can only shift gears when you are pedaling. You want the gear that is easy to pedal at 70-90 rpm.s with a lite pressure on the pedals. Before you come to a stop shift down to 1 or 2 so that it is easy to get started again.
