Big Lump in Stomach, Pain

About two-three months ago ago I noticed this large mass in my lower left abdomen. It doesn't protrude out of my belly, it's beneath the skin and fat (to the best of my knowledge) and to the side of the abdominal muscles. I have had on and off abdominal pain since later 2007, and have had two laparospic surgeries. It's beneath the leftmost, small scar.

I have shown one doctor, but she's my PCP and I only tend to see her for referrals because she seems very reluctant to accept that anything may be going on with my stomach. I have had a CT scan and an ultrasound in early 2008, but to the best of my knowledge the lump was not present then. In the last several weeks the pain has been much less severe and I was beginning to think that maybe it was all in my head, but I don't like having this big mass in my stomach.

The mass itself is maybe 4-5 inches long and from my bellybutton travels left and up, to the left of my rectus abdominis muscle. I can roll it a little bit, push it around, and it is a little tender. The one thing my doctors are reasonably sure of is that it isn't a hernia, but other than that they aren't sure just yet. I have an appointment with a gastroenterologist on the 17th.

The pain has been on and off for over a year, and at times is very severe and at other times is nearly non-existent. I can usually illicit pain by pressing on my lower stomach, and when the pain is present it is strong but diffuse across my lower stomach. Also, when pain is present I can push on my stomach (which makes the pain worse) and cause squishing noises. I know that it would usually be normal but they're VERY loud and have me a little concerned.

Sorry if this is long, I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas of what it could be and if it could be related to the pain.

PS: The imaging tests were negative and I had a diagnostic laparoscopy which said that there was no scar tissue buildup and no adhesions.

Hi Steve

It could possibly be distention of the colon, in which case they would have to find the cause. Distention could be caused by a few things, i.e. a twist in the colon, obstruction, inflamations or infections. Search online for distention of the colon it will give more info.
