Bicycling Across America - Questions?

Well I am not doing the whole united states travel this time. Seeing as this is my first time doing a long distance bike ride, I am going to do just from north to south coast. I am starting in Portland OR and going to the bottom of southern california. I have most of it planned out, except sleeping and safety. You see, I can not afford to get a hotel every night so I decided to bring a sleeping bag and a tarp instead. Any suggestions of where to sleep? Rest areas are out of the question, as I want to plan my route to where I am in a city everytime I sleep, for obvious reasons. I am doing this journey alone, and I am quite aware of the dangers. But in reality, there are always dangers. Any suggestions about sleeping and how to protect my stuff when I am asleep? I am bringing a baby carrier that attaches to the back, if that helps.

I did a treck from pittsburgh to D.C. this summer.
I highly suggest bringing a tent. Also, dont be afraid of rest stops, you dont want to camp in the big cities. Pack light clothes, but dont underpack. I would also try to find someone to go with you, incase something happens. hope this helps

first things first...if you are going to pull that baby carrier, you will want to stuff it with a TENT, yes a tent. make sure it has a rain fly. have 2 tarps for condensation, on on the inside and over the rainfly. cary a smalller tarp if you are going to bring a backpack. store everything in the carrier or put it all in your tent. sleep in any camp sites, or just find some woods or a low grade motel, or a park...people do it all the time over there.
