Have just become a born again cyclist after many years but unsure about just how hard to pump the tyres up ..... the manual states to inflate until the tyre appears firm between thumb and middle finger which on my pump gauge is about 30 psi .... but another book states to inflate to the recommended pressure on the tyre sidewall which states 50 psi which would take it even firmer! Appreciate some seasoned advice on this please ,,,, Thanks

Go with the pressure stated on the sidewall of the tire. Lower pressure will make the bicycle harder to pedal.

You can go firmer, up to rated psi.

Makes for a harder, but more efficient, ride.

Have fun!
