Bicycle help, broken front suspension?

A while back I did my Evil Knievel impression when the side of the handlebars caught a fence at high speed, the bike flipped over and sustained some damage, basically the front suspension wouldn't go down properly and was making a kind of hard knocking sound. Unfortunately, when I put some weight on the handlebars the cap flew off the left cylinder and fluid went all over the place. Basically my question is: do I need to buy a whole new front suspension set or can I just replace or repair the damaged bit? I can still ride it around but it's not very comfy on lumpy roads... the guy at the bike shop said he couldn't do anything about it but he didn't have much of a look because they only really do minor repairs.
