bicycle gears are hard to shift?

so im tuning my old bike, i've learned how the gears work and i tuned it to shift into the right gears, but it's very difficult to pull on the derailleur to move up the gears. anyone know how to make it easier to make the bike shift easier. in other terms, make it easier to pull the cable that's attached to the shifter that moves the derailleur
