Bicycle difference between LBS (local bike shop) and discounted store?

Hi, I was wondering what difference is between buying a bike at LBS (kozy's cyclery) or discounted store. I was looking at my LBS and saw a mantis ghost for $189.00. Then I googled the same bike and saw from 2 different discounted store (walmart & meijer) the exact same bike for $128.00. Does the LBS version have upgraded parts or something like that? I'm looking for a decent bike for $200 and under. I just need it to go back and forth from work. It's a 6 mile bike a day.
 
All the avobe is true, even in a short ride like that you could cut your time by 1/3 or 1/2 with a commuter bike rather than a jumper. You will have to compare the components to see if they are upgraded.

When something breaks on your bike and it will, who in W******* will be there to talk to you and fix it.

I get lots of freebies from my local bike shop (LBS) sometimes for the price of a java latte they fix my bike on Sunday before my ride.

Most bikes from W******* end up in the trash pile in a year, that makes them very espensive bikes.

Your budget is very low. LBS could fit you with a used bike of some quality for that. Or if you could double your money, you could buy something that will last 10x more.

You could buy a better bike if your boss will participate in the bike to work plan. There is a tax break for employers and people riding to work. even a loan to buy a decent bike.

That bike would be about the worst thing you could buy for transportation. You want to get a used hybrid bike that came from a bike shop not a department store. Mountain bikes are terrible on the road and a cheap full suspension bike will be junk.
 
What the above poster said is true of any bike..which is why, if you want a bike to last, you buy from a bike shop.

If you want a cheap throwaway bike and do not care about it, get it from walmart or target or other.
 
a. don;t get a bmx for 'transportation'

b. the LBS version will be assembled and adjusted right
the walmart one will be assembled by a guy from frozen foods working extra hours
so unless you can check all and redo about half the adjustments - i wouldn;t do it
