Better Value? Ford Escape or Subaru Forester?

im lookin into trading in my clunker for a new car using the gov't plan. Ive narrowed it down to a Subaru Forester and the Ford Escape. Does anyone have any experiece/advice with choosing between the 2? im leaning towards the Forester, but not sure which is a better deal for the $$$ i will be spending
 
The Forester is a better road car, the Escape is better off road, though neither is actually very good for true four-wheeling (that would take a Jeep or a Toyota 4Runner or the like, which get poor gas mileage). If you are looking for bad weather performance and occasional unpaved road stuff, the Forester is a better vehicle from the point of economy, handling, ride quality, road manners, etc. Unless you are considering an Escape hybrid, the bottom line will likely be less. So, if price is important, or if you intend an occasional off-road trek, the Escape makes more sense.
