When i buy a new tank what should i do like the nitrogen cycle etc. or can i just put my betta in the water like immediately

cycle it, definitely if you have the time. It leads to longer lives for the fish

Get a 2.5 gallon tank, a HOB(hang on back) or Sponge filter, and use the fleshless cycle process

Directions can be found here

You could also do 25% water changes 2 times weekly or 100% water changes once weekly, most fish wouldn't be able to handle the stress of 100% water changes, but bettas are pretty hearty and when I didn't have filters for my 2.5 and 5 gallons, they did fine with 100% water changes with no ill affects

Be sure to buy a 25 WAT adjustable heater and thermometer too, keep the tank at around 78*-82* and don't forget to vary your bettas diet. oh and water conditioner is a must, I usually don't ad that but i forget some people just don't think about it..

also, don't forget a lid, bettas are jumpers.

"Unlike other fish, you can add the betta directly to the water without acclimating him (putting the bag/container in the water to equal out the temps)"

That is false. Bettas need to be acclimated just like any other fish, yes, they are hearty, but not indestructible. they require the same care as any other fish.

I have kept 5 bettas for the past few years. And becuase they are hardy fish all you need to do is put it in the tank and its fine.

I have owned bettas for years and I have used the same method for all....and they have all survived between 3 and 5 years, so i'm guess its at least half way okay on them. lol
Anyways...if you have a filter you'll want to let it run for a few minutes before adding the betta. Preferably a couple days actually, but in a betta's case it's just to be sure the filter isnt going to fail on you. With other fish it's to make sure the water is purified and what not.
Unlike other fish, you can add the betta directly to the water without acclimating him (putting the bag/container in the water to equal out the temps). But, test the water with your finger to be sure the water the fish is already in, and the water in the tank isn't completely different or you'll have a shock & dead fish. So, just try to get the water in the tank the same as in the betta's bowl before adding him =D
Hope that helped!! Feel free to email me if you have an other questions =]]

it would live, use some of the "old water" it came with. it may stress him out. but thats about it.

okay so u should let the container which the betta is in to float on the water for about 20-30 mins. to allow the water to get to the same temperature as the one in the other tank/bowl temperature.don't put it immediately in the water or it might get sick or some thing.you could if u want but ur risking it.
