I got my betta about six months ago. He is a bright red male. Normally he is very active, eats well, and loves to flare at himself in the mirror. A few days ago i noticed that he was acting differently. He was laying at the bottom of the tank and would not eat. He also looked a little pale so i changed the tank water. Now he has moved to the top of the tank but stays in the corner and won't eat a thing. He continues to grow paler,is very lethargic, stopped building his bubble nest, and will not flare. I treated him for fungus today because that seemed like the only think that could possibly fit the symptoms but now I am worried that he might have ammonia or nitrate poisoning. He seems like he is breathing a little fast too. I don't know what to do because nothing seems to fit the symptoms completely and i don't know how to treat for nitrate or ammonia poisoning and i don't know if i can treat for more than one thing at once. Please help!!! I know that my fish is sick but i don't know what to do!!!!!!! Any help is greatly appreciated.

How big of a tank you have?

I suggest buy API's freshwater master kit...with the master kit you can test for ammonia, nitrItes, nitrAtes etc. If the tank happens to have ammonia and nitrIte of above 0, you need to do a 30% water change do get them both to 0 because they are fatal to fish. Is your betta with any other fish? I suggest doing PWC every week removing about 25% of the water. NitrAtes should be 20 ppm or below... removing and replacing some of the water will also bring done the nitrAtes to where they need to be. Good Luck and i hope your betta is okay. If you don't hurry up and do a water change or test the water than he might die if it's the case.

I recommend testing the water immediately to be sure whether or not water quality is to blame.

Have you researched the possibility of velvet?
