I got a female and male betta at Petsmart, the lady told me they'd be fine living together.
Earlier, he was following her around and flaring like crazy. But not chasing if that makes sense, just slowly following.
Now, they seem to have "split up" the tank, the female stays at the bottom and the male stays at the top, and they switch when they come up for air.
So, I'm wondering, should I leave them like this since there seems to be no problems? Or do I need to seperate them?

how big is your tank?
julie gave an excellent answer about the way a tank should look with two bettas.

They should be just fine together.. In fact you're probably going to end up with betta babies.
Unless you want these babies I would seperate them ASAP. It may already be too late.

Male and female betta fish can only live together if they are in a large enough tank (think, AT LEAST 20 gallons). The female needs plenty of places to hide, with rocks, plants, etc. If you are looking to breed them, it is not a good idea for the male and female to live together permanently. In fact, only the male should be in the tank as the eggs are developing. Look online if you need more information on that. Basically, they can live together as long as there's enough space to hide and avoid being chased/followed around!

Also- NEVER buy fish from petco. Their tanks are disgusting. Only buy a fish if the tank they're living in looks clean, and the fish you're interested and its tank mates are healthy. If the bettas are kept in little cups, make sure the cups are clean and they look healthy. Usually, independent, local specialty fish stores carry the best, healthiest fish.

males and females should really only be together while breeding, and after the eggs are laid they need to be seperated, the male will often fight (and kill) the female, most people (not everyone, but the majority of them) that work at the chain stores like petsmart and petco dont have a clue what they're doing, do your research before you buy fish, they're notorius for giving aweful info (like "sure, your oscar will love his new 10gal home!"). You can buy a tank divider

u need to separate them you need to talk to the manager at petsmart about the info you were given bettas cant be tanked together they will kill eachother in the wild they live seperatly the male blows bubbles then leaves and then the female lays the eggs and puts them in each bubble yea they need to be seperated before they kill eachother.

When I went to Petco the lady there said you can't keep a male and a female betta together.

Don't go to PetSmart go to PetCo, unless you do not have a PetCo. Maybe there breeding.

don't listen to Julie, lol, about the Petco

Male and female Bettas cannot live together! The woman misinformed you - male and female bettas should only be put together to breed. Your male will kill your female, and they need to be separated.
