I have been reading up on betta fish and everything I have read so far states that each individual betta will have it's own unique personality. I'm not really sure what to think about this...is it true?

I was also wondering if I could put a betta into a 10 gallon tank that has not yet been cycled. I was thinking that I could cycle the tank with the betta. About a year ago I had a gourami and I put him in the tank without cycling it first and he did just fine. Will a betta do alright?

I have one betta who is oblivious to everything, he just swims around in his plants, eats, and hangs out in his hide. But another hates snails, is okay with shrimp, and follows me when I pass by. They are very interesting fish.

I prefer to cycle first, and then add fish because it ensures that the fish is being placed in an ideal environment. At least allow the tank to cycle for a few weeks and monitor the water quality.

Yea in some tradition some people don't think so and some people do it really based on what people think.

Good Luck and no you can't cycle with a fish w/out it having a chance of dying
