Best year in music

Well I'm going for 1977. Not particularly for the quality of music this year was responsible for, but for the quality of music this year was responsible for.
Yes I know it's an obvious choice.

Off the top of my head 69 seems tops...

In A Silent Way - Davis
Court of the Crimson King
Let It Bleed
The Velvet Underground
Hot Rats
Karma - Pharaoh Sanders
At San Quentin
Arthur or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire
Hot buttered Soul
Willy and the Poor Boys
Trout Mask Replica
Green River
Uncle Meat
Bayou Country
Kick Out The Jams
Nipples
Ummagumma I think...

Which of the last 50 years has been the best in terms of music in your opinion?

(It's gonna take a while to make the poll, bear with me)

The above is a definite argument for '91. I have a soft spot for Teenage Fanclub and My Bloody Valentine!

I chose 1990 for good reason:

Depeche Mode - Violator
Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas
Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual
Pixies - Bossanova
Sinead O'Connor - I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got
Sonic Youth - Goo
Peter Murphy - Deep
Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting
Happy Mondays - Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches
Ride - Nowhere
Pet Shop Boys - Behaviour
They Might Be Giants - Flood
The Breeders - Pod
Alice in Chains - Facelift
The Fall - Extricate

...and of course: LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out

Pretty awesome year in music, huh?

I picked 1996 because:

- Tori Amos, 'Boys for Pele'
- Tool, 'Aenima'
- Chris Isaak makes a guest appearance on FrienRAB. (I love Chris Isaak)
- Crowded House plays their final concert on the steps of the Sydney Opera House in Australia, in front of an audience of almost 200,000. ProceeRAB from this concert went to charity.
- Singer Tori Amos is sued when a man crashes his car after being distracted by a billboard advertising her album. The billboard featured a photo of Amos breastfeeding a piglet. (Controversial music/ album covers at their best)
- The 'Macarena' makes its debut.

And, other albums I enjoy but aren't as significant that were released in 1996:
- Korn, 'Life is Peachy'
- Porcupine Tree, ' Signify'

EDIT (for fear of flaming): I would like to reinforce that my decision is based on personal opinion and this year is probably by far not the best year in music ever. However, I have only been alive since the '80s and thus did not witness first hand all of the wonderful musical revolutions that took place before then. I find myself unfit to judge which year was musically the best year, and so my choice is based on personal preference and musical events that affected me personally.

Ah, that album was good. After Life Is Peachy (with the cool cover) they just got worse and worse.

Signify was ****ing fantastic. Definitely one of Steve Wilson's best.

Well, '77 sprung to mind first for me, so it's the one I'll go with.

Nevermind the Bollocks
Germ-Free Adolescents
Spiral Scratch EP
The Clash
Aja
Heroes
Low
The Idiot
Lust For Life
My Aim Is True

...to name just 10.

I still don't think I can vote, but I'm tempted to go for 2006, though 2008 has been pretty good. A year from the 90's would be another option. Might go for 1977, though, not so much because I'm familiar with that year, but because of the punk rock explosion.

I just don't know.

1988 of course was nice...

Tender Prey - Nick Cave
...Nation of millions - Public Enemy
You Can't Do That on Stage - Frank Zappa
Transcendence - Crimson Glory
The Serpents Egg - Dead Can Dance
Last Exit - Iron Path
Danzig - Danzig
Delicate SounRAB of Thunder - Pink Floyd
