Best way to transport fish?

I have a calico ryukin goldfish (named Aesop) in my apartment at school, but since I'm going home for 2 and a half weeks for Christmas, I'm bringing him home. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to get him home. Aesop is about 8 cm / 3 inches (including his tail. Actual body is only about half of that). It's about an hour drive home.

My dad is coming to pick me up, and he thinks I should just pour out some of the water and hold the aquarium on my lap (measurements are below. It's 5 gallons), but my mom thinks I should put Aesop in a bag to take him home, and just pack the aquarium to put him in once we get home.

Which is the best way, or is there a different way I should do it? I just want the least traumatizing way to transport him, because I love Aesop :)

Tank measurements:
Length: 40 cm / 16 in
Width: 19.5 cm / 8ish in
Height: 25.5 cm / 10 in

when I transport a fish this time of year, I put the fish in a bag, and hold him under my coat to keep him warm. I dump as much as I can out of the tank, and make sure it doesn't break
