Best way to transport bikes with an Chevy Equinox?

Big trip coming up to Portland Oregon. Would like to do some mountain biking there and maybe on the way. Want to tranport 3-4 aluminum frame MTB's. This will be with a Chevy Equinox fully loaded inside.

Would I save any money by just renting bikes, instead of purchasing a transport system?
