best way to start exercising without pushing the limit to lose weight?

Obviously fixing te diet but some people exercise to build muscle or tone or whatever but I just want to lose some weight because after being on te birth control shot I gained a lot of weight within days after getting it. Now my favorite loose clothes don't fit and it bums me out. I'm quitting smokin and before I have either pushed myself to far or not enough any recommendations on the best way to get fit and lose a little weight? Anything is appreciated.
