Best way to set goals and achieve them?

I have never been good at working towards and accomplishing goals. I like instant results. If it takes too long I lose interest and give up. It's one of my major flaws, along with constantly doubting myself. These two flaws of mine seem to wreck havoc on my life. Combined, they make it rather hard for me to believe that I can accomplish anything,

For instance, right now I have set myself the goal of running a half marathon in 5 months time. I feel I am now financially invested in my goal of running a half marathon as I've got a gym membership and a decent (expensive) pair of running shoes.
However, I do not feel like I am emotionally invested. How can I make this goal actually mean something to me? How can I make this goal become a burning desire that I want to strive to accomplish? Because right now, it's just a goal I have set ahead of myself. A small island on the horizon that I may or may not reach. I feel a sense of apathy towards my destination. I like that I now have a sense of purpose, but where it will take me does not seem to bother me.
I've always felt like setting myself goals, was just another way to make me more disappointed in myself. Perhaps that is why I try to kid myself into thinking that I don't care about the outcome. Because if you don't care, you don't get disappointed.

How can I over come this??????
