I'm a teenager going into engineering, so I love to build things.
For my next project I'd like to make a word clock like this: http://qlocktwo.com/
I can do the electronics (My area of expertise),
But I've run into some problems with the glass front. First I have to say that I don't have any experience doing professional grade spray painting (Which I would demand of this). Is it even possible with rattle cans?
I want to spray paint the back side of the piece of glass black. But I need the letters to be unpainted so the light can get through.
So the question is: What's the best way to achieve this?
The letters each need to be about an inch tall.
I don't know about anyone else, but I cannot buy reverse letter stencils in Monaco (the font) where I live.
I could buy contact paper online, but I'm not sure if I can print on it (with a regular inkjet)?
Will I be able to cut out all 110 letters by hand.
My experience tells me that exact-o knives leave ragged edges.
Anyone have any ideas?
If you think I'd be able to cut out the letters by hand, then could I just print out the letters on thick paper, and glue them face down to the glass?
Also, will I be able to peel off the letters after three or more coats of paint?
Another Idea I had would be to put something onto the glass that the paint won't stick to. Like wax, or heavy layers of ink from the printed letters. Then carefully scrape the letters clean.
Tell me what you think. I've never done anything like this, so I appreciate the help.
Oh, I also have to add, that I think I'm more capable than most people of very careful/detailed work.
