Best water purification techniques for camping/hiking?

I would like to know the safest and most reliable water purifying techniques and what water purifying products work the best and are ideal for camping and hiking

more specifically, the best water purifying device, MSR, Katadyn, Steripen, etc.
 
You get what you pay for, if you can afford MSR, then get it because it will filter anythng. The cheaper you go, larger the minimum diameter of microrganism it is able to filter. I have a middle of the road filter for big lakes that we're not too worried about. Great for on the go. For nasty water, I boil or use halezone tablets, iodine tablets, of 1 drop of bleach/2 litres, and flavour with juice crystals.
