Best things to buy for my beta fish?

If I bought a let's say a ship with a hole in the side would the beta like to stay in there or would he prefer a plant (also wondering what's better real or fake plants) anyways to the point if you could make a list of items most necessary for a long living healthy beta. I already own mine but I'm just curious on the best thing for my fish :)

A filter
A heater
A 5 gal tank min
Live plants (not necessary)
A varied diet
Water conditioner
Meds (just in case)
A net
A bucket
A siphon
Rocks for decoration and maybe something to hide in like you ship..

Think that's it,

Best of luck Angel

I'd stay away from anything with sharp edges (like the ship). Betta's fins are fragile so they could easily tear them on something like that. Live plants are best, but silk are okay too. I often see my betta resting on the leaves of her plants.

The other answerer already listed the necessary items, but I'd also like to add a pH test kit (bettas do best in water with a steady pH of 6.5 to 7.5)

20+ litre tank: anything less is animal cruelty

heater: They are tropical fish and become lethargic and sick without one

Filter: to keep the water clean

I put a long viney leafy plant on it, and it seems to like it, I sometimes see it surrounded by the plants and acting like a predator waiting for its prey. I also added lights for the plants
