need to get a helmet but am not looking to spend a lot of money, but i would like the best for the price. Thanks for any suggestions

always ''try before you buy''...never get a helmet online...they have to fit perfectly..

The only cheap helmet I have experience with (being that it was my first and I used it for 3+ years) is AFX (AFXhelmets.com). Though it looks like their line of helmets has dwindled since I purchased mine (model# FX-97), they still offer DOT approved helmets for dirt cheap. My helmet was not very comfortable, lacked decent venting (to cool your head in hot weather and clear breath condensation in cold), and had excessive wind noise at highway or better speeds. On the upside it was cheap, relatively lightweight for a full face modular, its styling wasn't ridiculously over the top, and it was offered in flat black (a color that seems to be a stigma in the helmet world...).

However there are other cheap brands out there that will make anyone who takes their riding gear seriously cringe with disgust (try it sometime, people with Shoei's and the like will look at you with disdain :)

Just a quick search found:
JIX
G-Max
HJC
Sparx
KBC
Z1R
Cyber
Zamp

Essentially any mid to low end helmet manufacturer makes at least one style of helmet for under $100.

I highly recommend however that you DO NOT purchase a helmet online unless you have tried said helmet on already and found the correct size for your head. Go to a local shop that sells helmets and talk to a salesman to find what fits properly for safety and comfort. Then you can either buy there for convenience or get the same one online for cheaper (depending on shipping).

But remember, in the end you get what you pay for, not just in safety, but in comfort as well.
