I am looking for a good sprocket setup on my 1980 Suzuki GS550L. First gear does not last very long, but second gear can barely climb a small grade hill. I am basically looking for better torque and acceleration i think. The GS550L has plenty of power, i just dont know if the 15 - 50 sprocket set up is good. I notice the most problems when trying to keep up with others in 2nd and 3rd gear. Any suggestions?

If you are trying to get more torque I would say go with a 14- 51 set up. Problem there being that you are going to be running out of 1st gear a bit faster but you will be getting somewhere around a 10% average torque increase linearly. You will lose a bit of the top speed too but you will definitely notice a big difference in torque. If you think that you really need a lot more torque go with a 14-52 set up. Just keep in mind the more you deviate from the stock sprockets the less gear you get but the more torque per gear. I personally feel like its a fair trade as even if you dont have as much gear to work with you dont need it because you'll get and going a lot faster so you'll be able to afford the small loss. Another thing I did on my bike to enhance it is getting AFAM super light steal sprockets and a thinner chain. I dont know what size chain you have right now but I would run a 520 if you have something a lot thicker.
