Best software for creating multimedia art prints?

I'm interested in creating multimedia art prints consisting of photos, words & graphics -- something with a lot of creative freedom. I prefer something that's open source or freeware if available. (Software is for prints so I don't need audio, video, or animation tools.) Many thanks in advance! ~Anne
