I am 18 and looking for an outdoor hobby to keep me active. What is a good road bike that is durable and easy to maintain? Also, what is the whole "fitting" process?

Thanks, and I'm looking for a bike <$400

For your price range you might consider a comfort road or sometimes called a flat bar road bike. New performance bikes are above your price range. You can get something like the Schwinn Super Sport http://www.schwinnbike.com/usa/eng/Products/Road/Fitness/Details/1311-S9SUPS-Super-Sport
You can find them for much less than MSRP at a store like Performance Bikes.

The other alternative you have is to shop for a good used bike. A place like Craigslist.org has many under $400. You will need to shop at the bike shops first to find out what is good. All the various brands and equipment can't be discussed in one concise answer. You have to do your research.

As far as the fitting process goes that also is something you need to visit the bike store for. They can advise you as to what size bike is best for you. It is no mystery, just good practice on how long your inseam is and how long your torso and reach are.
