In another question that Gallop answered, she mentioned using sterile saline and Vetericyn on wounds. She also mentioned that a lot of our old standby treatments like the oil-based ointments have been found by current research to actually DELAY healing. I read an article several years ago saying that nitrofurazone ointment in particular kills healthy cells and delays healing. And I've read that scrubbing wounds with providone iodine scrubs does the same. Yet whenever the vet comes out to treat a wound, he immediately scrubs it with betadine and then applies nitrofurazone ointment. People at the barn look at me like I'm crazy all the time when I clean wounds with just water and then spray on the Vetericyn (and honesty I have no idea why the Vetericyn works, but I've seen it cause really ugly wounds to heal cleanly in very short time). Because "everyone knows" that nitrofurazone ointment/Neosporin/insert-name-of-your-favorite-wound-creme-here is the best thing.
Anyway, I've been searching the net for an article that would clear up the confusion and give me the most current research on equine wound treatment. But I'm not finding it. So what is the current best practice in wound treatment, and if you could point me to an article or some research I'd appreciate it! Thanks.
Driver, thanks for the articles but I'm looking for something research-based and definitive. One of the articles you found recommends hydrogen peroxide, another recommends applying "your favorite ointment," and one is an advertisement for a wound care product. The internet is littered with articles on wound treatment. The people who wrote them are probably relying on the old "everybody knows that you put X on wounds b/c that's what I've always done." I'm trying to find out if there is any consensus in the veterinary community, and what the most current research recommends. If anybody could help me sort that out I'd be grateful!
