Best Photoshop for beginners?

I have never used photoshop before. Only things like Adobe PhotoDeluxe, but not real photoshop. I want to buy a photoshop program, but I don't know if I should start with an older program or go for a new one? What would you reccomend? And also, would you reccomend online tutorials or an instruction book, like 'for dummies'?
