Best phone/plan for long distance in canada

Hey everyone, I know this may be a difficult question, but any help at all is greatly appreciated.

I'm moving to Halifax, Nova Scotia soon, and I'm looking to get a cell phone. I've never had any need for one before, but I do now, and I'm lost as to what plan is the best. Here's's my situation:

For the first while, I will need my phone to call mostly from Halifax to St. John', Newfoundland (Canadian long distance). These calls will more than likely be made in the evening from home as I'm at school all day. I will also need a text plan.

I originally looked at the Motorola Z6w because it has wi-fi calling. As most of my calls would be from home, I could use the wi-fi. I originally (and maybe naively) thought I would be able to use it with skype which would be 3$ a month unlimited long distance. I could then get the cheapest local package, and a text one as well. Unfortunately, Fido (who sells the z6w) uses a propitiatory wi-fi system called Fido Uno which costs 20 bucks a month, which from what I can gather, isn't much cheaper than getting a normal plan...

So what I'm looking for is a barebones phone (I don't need music / video etc.) or a phone that can be used with skype. I would just get a cheap local phone with no long distance and use skype separately, but if I'm out and need to answer a long distance call, I don't want to be charged heavily for it.

As for the plan, I need something that enables me to bump up my local minutes once I start to make friends within the community. I need long distance texting, and either a good long distance rate (fave 5?) or something with wi-fi that is skype enabled. And remember, I'm in Canada.

I know this may (?) be a complex case, but I appreciate any help!

Thanks!

Not much action on this one. Too complicated for my tired old brain!

If you get a plan with "unlimited incoming minutes," you could use YAK Callback. Go to YAK.com and do some reading. My LD bill from YAK last month was 8 cents! The first 50 minutes are free, too.

Post what you end up doing...

Hey all,

I ended up getting the LG Keybo from Telus, with the fave 10 student plan. I pay 35 a month (probably closer to 43 with the system access fee and taxes). It comes with 200 local minutes and unlimited talking / texting to 10 numbers across canada. It seems to be a good deal. I probably won't need to do any talking or texting to phones outside of those ten, so I'm not going to get hit with any surcharges. The dedicated keypad is definitely worth the money as it enables me to fire off a text really quickly (i'm going to be in school / very busy for the next while) I also got it on a two year contract (for 100$ instead of 50), as I'm sure in two years time I'll be able to get a much better phone for a much better plan.
