Has anyone done research or own a treadmill that is recommended for those with back and/or hip issues? Good and bad opinions would be appreciated. I will also ask my PT this week but want to hear from you awesome folks out there. Hope everyone is doing well. Thinking of you all and putting out good back vibes. B

Check for ones that have the best shock absorption. I did a lot of research for mine that gave me the best of all options, to include the length of the tread if you are a tall person, ones that vary in speed and incline (auto only), a treadmill that can handle your weight load (my guy is 300#), and most of all for me, one that had maximum shock absorption.

i am 23+ months op fusion at l4/l5, currently returned to PT due to some new low back pain/sciatica and I was told no treadmill for now, because of the repetitive motion it creates, aggrevates the spine more.

That's my 2 cents worth. Hope it helps.

My doctor said that a recurabent bike would be much better and easier on my back than a treadmill.

Hi everyone, I just had my six week post-op checkup (L5/S1 fusion) and asked my doc about the treadmill. He said it was fine to start using it for walking only, no running. I haven't had any problems, of course I'm on pain meRAB. I wan't to start on my eliptical without using the arm movements (they tend to twist your back frrom side to side). Anyone have any feedback on the eliptical?.......................Debbie

Hello Debbie ~

I've been told an elliptical trainer is ok. Personally I would think it would depend on the particular trainer you use. Depending on how it is designed, some are much more like steppers and would be much more jarring to your spine. I would say give it a gentle try and see how you feel.

I tried ours last week and made it for 3 minutes!! My legs felt like jelly, but my back felt OK, so I'm going to continue with it when I cannot walk outside.

How are you feeling this week??

MMOM, Hi, I'm doing fairly well this week. I think the neurontin is kicking in finally. I am taking 600mgs at bedtime, and two 5/325 percocets at around 11:00AM and around 4:00PM. That usually get's me through the day relatively pain free. How about you? I hope the day comes when I can get off all of this crap.

I did the treadmill again this morning and some light arm work with 1 pound weights. I think I will give my elliptical a try soon. It has more of a gliding back and forth motion than some of the ones that are more like steppers just like you said.

I was wondering if you or anyone else has seen a post from Mamakitkat lately? I haven't and am concerened about her. I know she has alot of different back & health issues. I may do a post directed straight to her if no one has heard from her

Have a good day................Debbie

Be sure to check with your doctor first. Some spinal specialists feel they can cause further problems.

I have seen her post here and there on a few threaRAB but she did not mention herself just the person she was responding to.

My year + experience with a treadmill caused my stenosis to go into overdrive. Please get a trusted medical opinion before you buy one! If they say yes...I'll give you a very good price on the one collecting dust in my garage.

treadmills are not good for backs or joints in general. If you are looking for the best type of machinery for exercising, your best bet is a recurabant bike. Elipticals are ok as long as you don't have the twisting of the pelvis.
