Best non-spanking book on disciplining kids? Was beaten as a kid, determined not...

...to pass it down...? I already know I'm going to spend a lot of time with my child to aid effective child-rearing. I do not want to discipline at all the way my father did, even though I turned out very well I am intensely angry at times even if I do have excellent self-control. But I'm afraid that I'm going to make the other error, which is to not discipline enough i.e. the horrible libertine parent who raises a little criminal without boundaries, out of fear of mirroring the way I was raised.

I know and plan to use the knowledge that discipline is about reinforcing good behaviors not just about reprimanding bad ones. I plan to use time-outs, taking away things, although in the very young years I think saying 'no' and showing disapproval will be enough. I know to role-model good behaviors and be the kind of person the child wants to imitate and please. But I don't know the repertory e.g. what specific techniques.

Would love to know about excellent books that help me frame a whole new reference for child-rearing so that I never have to think about my own as a resource.

Please help with recommended reading.
