Best Music Player

Hey guys, need some help on what the best music player to use for my Galaxy S handset. Is the stock Samsung Music Player good enough to use a 3500 song library or is there a market or non-market app that's sleeker and easier to use? I've tried DoubleTwist, but the desktop version of it is slow as cold molasses and a pain in the butt.

My phone has been rooted and I've enabled side-loading as well as a lag-fix. So I can take pretty much any suggestions you have.

Thanks,

Josh.

Double twist is slow? I guess its getting more and more like iTunes all the time. I use mixzing and my fianc?e uses morp player.

Slow in that, to sync and remove songs/playlists take FOREVER. They do a pretty good job of emulating the look and feel of iTunes, but they need to speed up the sync process a bit.

Doubletwist is almost awesome. Here is how I use it:

I have been ripping my CDs using Apple Lossless for years. My kids all use iPods, and my wife uses iPhone. I also happen to have some very rare, but very important riles in WMA. I also have quite a few MP3 and the itunes standard files (kids purchase songs off itunes).

That said, Doubletwist can take all these formats, and encode them onto my Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant) such that all files play perfectly. It does take the lossless files and pares them down to about 20% of their lossless size, but I actually like this on my phone.

I still use itunes as my base. I create my playlist on itunes. I then synch my playlist on DT. When I synch my Vibrant, my playlists from itunes are moved onto my Vibrant.

I'm not sure I would use DT as a stand alone app. But it is a great bridge between the legacy itunes and my Vibrant. It is the only app I know that can tie all these protocols such that they can all be played on my phone, which has now become my media player.

I play the DT playlist on both the Samsung music player (not bad), and the DT music player on my Vibrant. What is nice, is when I use DT music player, it scrobbles the songs to my lastfm app, so those songs show up when I play lastfm.

I can see how that would be super beneficial. The problems I had with it were 1.) A lot of my library is DRM protected and won't transfer to DoubleTwist. I don't wanna have to go through iTunes upgrade to let me do what I want with the DRM files. 2.) The desktop DoubleTwist was super buggy for me. Whenever I updated my playlist on iTunes, DoubleTwist wouldn't recognize it when it synced with iTunes.

The DoubleTwist app on the phone, however, is phenomenal. I loved the heck out of it. But the syncing and such was a hassle for me. So I gave up. I ended up going with Mixzing, which is pretty easy to use. So far, i like it. If it ends up being a drag, I might try DoubleTwist again.

Thanks for replying though!

try songbird for your desktop. it is kinda slow, to be honest, if you load up a bunch of add-on's, but mine is quick enough once it gets started (and that's saying a lot considering the computer i'm using). mixzing and tunewiki are the first music player apps that come to mind. i just use the stock android music player though (which i don't think your phone has...)

Search "cubed" on the market. You'll see a black cube with the number 3 next to it. It the best in my opinion. Play with view mode and change the layout of your album art. I love the "morph flow" look! It's definitely the most visually pleasing music player for Android. As far as syncing your music with your pc, I use double twist, but its not a big deal for me. I usually just drag and drop cds to my Droid.

You guys do realize that its most likely slow due to the speeds of your SD cards and USB connection right? I wouldn't blame poor transfer speeds on the software you're using.

I was wondering that too...Also in my meager experience almost any conversion software is somewhat slow, of course that will also depend on your computer. Personally, I have a 16G sd card, so I don'y worry about compressing my files... Oh and I use the MixZing paid app and NeoMusic/Mp3 to play and fetch music on my phone.

I'm using USB 2.0, which is dog slow. My PC is a quad processor, so it's relatively fast. Wish I had BT 3.0 on my PC to match it on my Vibrant. I suspect it would be much faster than USB.

Doubletwist does run multiple applications when a sync is invoked, so it can seem a little slow. From what I can tell:It pulls in Sorting, File, Artist, Album, Song, and other detail from iTunes and Windows Media Server.

It converts the file to an appropriately compatible file format for the Android OS.

It reduces the size of large or lossless files at a ratio of between 5 and 10 to 1.
It does quite a lot, so that's likely the reason for the apparent slowness of the sync.

I have a legacy of using iTunes to archive all my music, and to playback most of my music via Apple compatible devices. So I continue to use iTunes to manage my playlists and my files. Doubletwist fully utilizes the use of iTunes as my music database and server. To be clear, I don't manipulate any playlists or files within Doubletwist. I do all this in iTunes, and DT pulls the data from iTunes. Doubletwist is simply the gateway between the database (iTunes) and my player (my Vibrant). This is the solution for families that have both iPods/iPhones with a ton of AAC and Apple lossless files AND they have a new high density Android phone. It's awesome. It's better than even the dudes at DT claim. Andless is not bad, but is not nearly as scalable to manage the 25k songs I own in lossless format. It's only in the instance that I want to pull some really quality ripped songs to my phone to play.

Here's the punchline; I have about 30GB of lossless files on my internal memory on my Vibrant, though they are reduced. Quality is actually quite good for headphones and a portable device. Not at home, but definitely for mobile use. 30GB reduced to about 6GB. I'm loading up more files.

Have you tried to pull some DRM protected songs from iTunes to your Android phone using Doubletwist? I'm not sure, since I have almost exclusively Apple Lossless. But I may buy a iTunes song and see what happens. I would be very surprised if the song didn't carry through.

I thought DT was buggy too. But, I've been working with it, and I realized that my Sorting window needed to be updated. I believe DT uses the Sorting view from iTunes to synch up. Not always, but in all the instances that I had a sync problem, I was able to correct it by updating the Sort window on the files. I had about 300 files that didn't pull in correctly, and DT declared them as "unknown". But after I updated the Sort window, it cleared up 100% of them. I'm completely synched and have no errors or unknowns in DT.

I completely agree with you on most of your points but because I use my phone as a BT player in my car, I am often unhappy with anything but loseless... Besides, I try to limit my phone library to under 1,000 songs to shorten search time... I've made a few files on my computer that I have saved with a few hundred songs each in them and it's no problem "swapping" them out before I leave if I want to change/add them. Heck, I'm having a hard time getting off Pandora now that I have decent coverage and 3G... T-Mobile really sucked around here!

Nothing like lossless. Sounds like a solid system you've got. I'm actually a newbie to using my phone as a media player. I had the G1 until about a month ago. The G1 was NOT a decent media player for multiple reasons.

I could imagine, I totally dismissed the Android platform initially because of my dislike of the G1...

I recently got the BT car stereo and have totally run with it! My car has never seen a cd and I may as well have not even hooked up the ant... Besides, it's very nice when you are using the phone as a gps to be able to her the voice directions in the car speakers or even when you are using it as a speaker phone. Although, I normally run a head set for that.

That music player is included in most ROMs for the Droid instead of the stock player. It has the best widgets. Sorry I can't recall the name of it though.
