The 70's is a mixed bag.

The early part of the decade is full of stone cold classics like The Godfather Part II & lesser known gems like Two Lane Blacktop.

Then Spielberg & Lucas rode into town & ushered in the age of the empty blockbuster.

Add Charley Varrick to that list.

A cracking Don Seigel thriller starring Walter Matthau in a rare straight role, as a thief who unwittingly steals monsy from a mafia-owned bank.

And a slightly obscure one...The Sugarland Express. Actually Spielbergs first movie (Duel was made for TV).

Based on a true story about a couple who break out of prison because their baby is being given up for adoption. They take a cop hostage and drive across the state to get their baby back, followed by a procession of squad cars, curious members of the public and the obligatory press.

I think it was pitched as a comedy at the time, but it's not really. It has moments of humour, but Goldie Hawn as the neurotic, trailer-trash mother actually gives a very good, slightly unhinged performance.

It also has some of the best 'scope photography you will ever see. Worth watching.

Brian DePalma's work:

Sisters
Phantom Of The Paradise
Obsession
Carrie
The Fury
Dressed To Kill

There's so much pure cinema, and the love of it, going on in these films, as opposed to what has just got stuck in the consciousness after being so arse-lickingly lauded by the critics of the time.

You must also see the 1972 British horror film Death Line. And ANYTHING made throughout the entire decade by Ken Russell.
