I want answers!

I am a girl 20+ years of age I cycle six miles per day to and from work, there are huge hills and some straights, the terrain varies from smooth surfaces to slightly gravely and potholey lol. What sort of bike is suitable for this terrain? I have a basic bike atm and have some awesome clothing/equipment already. I just need someone in the know to really point out one or two bikes and a price range. I am so indecisive when it comes to these things, I just want something that feels right. The bike I have at the moment is kinda slugish and heavy I need something with a bit of zip to it. Appreciate any help or opinions. Price range not too much of a worry but we are looking 300-400 pounds approx, with a bit of leeway
