to make stencil material in photoshop, i've generally used the method of Adjustment > Threshold to change it to just black and white, then added a slight gaussian blur. however, this often is too harsh and turns out bad: portions of the image are either too dark, or are bleached out and have no detail. also, i only have CS2.
