best long hiking dogs for packing and guarding?

What kinda dog would be the best for long hikes such as the PCT hiking 200 miles or more . A dog that could be a friend ,gard, and also tough enough to not get hurt. don't say pit-bull cause mine wont last tree days crossing mountain passes. sorry pit-bull fans there not tough enough. Im thinking the draft dog would be but I would like to hear what y'all think.
I geuss I should say that Im from the north west so Im talking the rockys not really a hot place. It would have to be good In all weather.
 
If you want the dog to run soon, get a full grown animal, not a puppy. Running with dogs when they are too young can ruin their hips and joints.
