Best John Hughes Film

I noticed Weird Science was on Freeview last night. Always takes me right back to my childhood. Watched it many times.

I recorded it but I thought I'd invite a few frienRAB over for a double bill.

I'm thinking Breakfast Club. If pushed that would be my favorite Hughes film. It's a nice one to have with frienRAB around as you can quote the characters that fit best with your personality.

What's your fave?

Answer the question Claire.

Against the grain. It's not one of my favorites. Don't get me wrong I can watch it from time to time and do have it on DVD.

What do you like about it?

Weird Science and Sixteen Candles are probably my faves.

Although as comedy it's undoubtedly not in the 'sophisticated' league of FB, Weird Science played a formative part in my sense of humour, and it does achieve a balance of clever vs puerility whilst the John Candy comedies et al do not.

As drama, Sixteen Candles is sweet and understated, as opposed to The Breakfast Club which now looks quite frankly embarrassing and silly.

That's a classic and my favourite too, along with Uncle Buck. What a loss John Candy was as well. Anyway, I also enjoyed The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller.

I would agree. I love Ferris Beuller too, but PTA would always be my fave.

I think it's actually the best performance Candy ever gave. Though it is a comedic role, he invested it with a lot of pathos and sadness. And it bears repeated viewings, because you can see the little nuances in Candy's performance that signal the revelation about his character at the end.

Ferris Bueller for me. It's almost the perfect distillation of his film making style. Great performances all round.

Weird Science is a guilty pleasure, and I think I can recite every line as I watch it.

It's lean, contains archetypes but not stereotypes and doesn't slip into maudlin sentimentality at the end, which is what slightly spoils PTA for me.

A great line from PTA -
"She may be skinny, but she's strong. First baby, came out sideways. She didn't scream or nothin'" !! :D

Favourite John Hughes film? this of course:

Hard one.

I would definitely have The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off & Planes, Trains & Automobiles as my top three with Weird Science closely trailing.

I love the first two Home Alone films also and enjoy Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles.

I'd go with National Lampoons Vacation because it also has AMH so you'd get the double theme.
Also you might get a bit bored watching two teen movies.

Edit

Looked up JH movies and found out he wrote and prduced "Baby's Day Out". I love that film, anybody else seen it?

He's made so much 80's goodness.

I think Planes, Trains and Automobiles is my favourite though. Not only laugh out loud moments but I near on blub at the end :D
