Best dog breed for first time owners and my lifestyle?

hey,

I would like to know the best type of dog for a first time owner.
i would like a small-medium sized dog.
one that is very active, doesn't bark a lot and doesn't shed too much.
I don't want a very hairy dog. or one that lies around a lot.

I also want one that is a loving, caring Companion. :)

I live in the country, so i have a big front and backyard.
They are both fenced.
The dog will be alone about 3 days a week for 4 to about 5 1/2 hours.

I thought about a Jack Russel Terrier,
but i did a lot of research and a lot of people have said that a JRT is not a good breed for a first time owner.
is that correct ?
 
Get an Australian Cattle Dog. They are very active and are loving. They aren't lazy! And don't shed to much. They are great with the family too!
