Best direction to fire a sub in a Jeep Wrangler?

I'm going to put a single 10" sub behind the rear seat of my '98 Wrangler but I really don't know what direction would be best for the sub to fire. I don't particularly want to fire it downward because its a reaaally nice looking Polk Audio sub and I'd like to be able to show it off to my friends. Firing it forward or backward would be possible if I got really creative with the box building, the problem there is that the Grille for the sub sticks out a couple of extra inches from the box and space in the front/back direction is already extremely limited. I'm not entirely sure how well a single sub firing to one side would sound. I'm also not sure about aiming it straight up in the air, this is a soft top Jeep so the sound doesn't reflect back in, it just vibrates the fabric and goes straight through. If I choose to get creative and face the sub forward there will be only a thin foam seat between the back of my head and the sub, most of the time that seat will even be removed so the sub will have a straight shot at me.. do you think this would be too over-powering? I listen to light and heavy rock so I don't want to be "beating the block down with bass" so to speak. If the sub is fired backward it will only have about 2 inches between the subs cone and a flat steel surface, will this cause a poor sounding bass that maybe only the people behind me will get to hear?
