I must admit I'm rather new to this whole forum and phone scene in and of itself, but I've tried my best to search and find information about data tethering. I couldn't find really enough to answer all my questions though, so I'm posting here hoping that someone can help explain it to me and recommend any options I may have missed.
I just moved to a new house that's pretty far out from town. I still get great cell phone coverage from Cingular, but the only ISP available is satellite. It's not too expensive, but the problem is it has an awfully restrictive bandwith cap which is just killing my normal usage habits. I've been researching alternative high-speed internet services, and data tethering seems to be exactly what I'm looking for if I can get it as I've seen described. There are a couple things I'm wondering about however.
Which service(s) and or phone(s) would you say is the best to data tether on with the ultimate goal of using it as an ISP for your computer?
I've heard a lot of good about Verizon, but is there a way I can check if they have good service in my area? (I only know Cingular has good reception here.)
I know there are unlimited data plans, but do cell phone companies endorse tethering, or is it a company by company basis, or what?
Do I need to buy an expensive phone in order to get unlimited data transfer and being able to hook it up to my computer?
What kinds of speeds can I expect? Does it vary on coverage?
How hard is it to actually hook up your phone to your computer?
If you do data tether, could you please tell me:
-What company / cell phone service you have; including the type of plan.
-What phone you have.
-How you connect to your computer.
-How much data transfer you actually use.
-What speeds you get.
Any other information about tethering would be greatly appreciated. I'm just getting into this whole thing right now and I'm really unclear about the different types of service plans, companies, and phones.
