Best Commuter Ducati (or other)

How bout a KTM duke??? Sounds like a good fit from what you mentioned you was looking for... look fun as h*ll to ride... I have considered one myself.
 
I talked to a guy who just bought one of these.

He said he'd been riding for over 20 ears and that the KTM was the most fun to ride bike he'd ever had.

I do not know what he had previous. He was REALLY happy with the KTM though.
 
I've been using a little black Sport1000 to do just this. It has a small flyscreen and the small Ducati tank bag, and I carry a messenger bag. Quick, light, nimble, comfortable.

But the suggestion of the GT1000 is good, too.

My dealer loaned me a new S4R for the day when I had the Busa in for a dyno checkup.

It was great around town but really needed an aftermarket clutch slave.
 
You're list of criteria screams one thing to me: Dual Sport. Forget Ducati, I love them too, but any model they make will just be a compromise to meet all your needs. And with sport touring bikes, you gain comfort, but loose that narrow width you want. Find yourself a nice few year old KLR or XR 650, cheap as heck or if you want trick, look at a KTM or Husky Supermoto. Set of bags and your set. Narrow, great at taking crappy pavement, comfy and excellent mileage. A dual sport is always worth having in the garage. I sold my last one and kicked myself ever since. I'm in the market for one now, and I can promise you, I'll never be without one again. It's the Swiss Army Bike. Does everything well. And if it's raining or crappy, you don't have to feel guilty about riding it. It's a dirt bike!
 
Agree with this thinking. Lots of dual sports around from BMW's R800/1200 GS twins to F and G 650 singles to KTM's, Husky, Kawasaki, Honda etc. The Ducati line of sport classics are also nice as I mentioned earlier the GT 1000 and Sport1000 as well. They have a short wheelbase, are narrow in width, comfy, have decent power, no fairings to mess with, not expensive and easy to work on.
Lots of good suggestions here. Let us know what you decided on.
 
I have an 848 and agree that is not a good commuter bike or good around town for that matter. I also have an 800 S2R Monster that I user for back and forth to work and general town riding. The Monster is great for this type of use. I even have the saddle bag that Ducati offers on it and it makes it great for back and forth to work or general running around. I have ridden a Hyper Motard and as fun as it is I don't think it's as practical all around as the Monster. Just my two cents.
