Best Commuter Ducati (or other)

By way of background, I bought a 1098S last summer. It's the only bike I own and has been an absolute blast. I usually ride it on the weekends on canyon roads outside of Los Angeles.

I've recently been riding it to work a few times a week. The commute is 18 miles each way on mostly freeways, with a couple miles of city streets.

I'd like to commute more often on a motorcycle, but not on my 1098. I guess there are a few reasons for this. First, I don't like the idea of piling on the miles commuting (eating up the tires and getter ever closer to scheduled service). Second, it isn't a particularly comfortable commuter ride. Not horrible or anything, but the riding position is not the best for that kind of ride. Third, the bike itself doesn't seem all that comfortable being used for commuting. The engine gets really hot and when traffic is backed up and I'm splitting it seems like I'm constantly between 1st and 2nd gear and the bike isn't all that happy with 1st (plus it makes the ride rough). I'd like to get away from the 1098 as a commuter and use it for weekend fun only.

So, what do people recommend as different commuter bike? I like the idea of a Monster 696 (or maybe the big one) or the Hypermotard. Would commuting life be any better on either of those bikes? The downside I see with the Hyper is that it has small gas tank. I'm not keen on filing up every day.

In order of priority, my criteria are as follows:

1. Skinny/small enough to lane split.

2. Good in stop and go and relatively slow speeds. Able to tackle horrible pavement pretty well.

3. Comfortable riding.

4. Gas mileage.

Any recommendations? I'd look outside of the Ducati family too I guess. I like the idea of a Triumph Street Triple or Speed Triple, but I've never ridden one.

What up Jason. I too have a 1098 and used to commute here in Orange County and it is definately not meant to be used that way. Have you had your suspension set up yet? I weigh 155lbs and it made a huge difference but still sprung to much. You can also try some clip-ons that raise the bars 10mm or even 20mm and that will make it a little better. Other than that you will have to get something not so racey for the commute. Get an older 600 jap bike or like you said a monster.

Hey. Yeah, I'm not really interested in raising the bars or in any way altering the bike to make it a better commuter. I would rather just get a different bike for commuting. Have you ridden a Monster? Think it would be a good commuter?

here is what i would do (if i had the bucks). i would get a touring bike like the fjr1300 or one of the bmw's. that way i could go on long comfortable rides across the states a couple of times a year and get into endurance riding.

My Fiancee has the '06 M620. I occassionally commuted on it. It's great. Monsters are a really great way of moving around town. I'm tempted to get a 696. Took it for a test ride, it's not a match for a 1098 or 848, but it will bring a smile to your face, especially around town. That's what it's geared for. Just make sure you get rid of those stock pipes.

696 is good, but depends on how hot it gets over there. It's not uncommon for my 696 to be sitting on 6 bars by the time I get into the city after a 45min ride. It's not that hot in brisbane, just no wind in the city. 6 bars is fine when you are moving....but sitting at traffic lights.....

It's bearable though because Duc's sound and look awsome...makes up for all the sweat and hot legs.

Best bike for lane splitting ever..

AANNNNDDD you can fit your wife, shopping and 2 kids on it at once !!

How about a Ducati GT1000.
Take a test ride on one and you will love it. Even better with the Termis and bags. The perfect commuter!
