"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning her safely to earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind..."

What message was President Kennedy most likely sending with this statement he made in 1961?

a. Only the United States will ever be capable of landing a man on the moon.
b. It is important to maintain the United States’ long-time reputation as the leader in the space race.
c. If the United States cannot land a man on the moon within ten years, the government should abandon the space program.
d. Landing a man on the moon will show the Soviet Union that the United States is the more powerful nation.

I think the answer lies in his last sentence. . which would mean that b comes closest.

That's D - there was no real reason to put a man on the moon - it was a neat idea, and I remember the day the first moon lander touched down. I was on a dock unloading a ship and a cheer went up from the workers. It surprised me how interested everybody was in this venture. But we did it only to stay ahead of the Soviet Union. They were going great guns in their space program.

What a horrible waste of human energy it was to have the Soviets as our official enemy all those years!! We could have gone together to the moon and onto Mars.
