Does anyone here know of any standout Christmas episodes in anime? Most I've seen are pretty filler-ish and generic. What shows do you know of that feature Christmas episodes/specials that could truly be considered "special"?
The Love Hina Christmas Special is the best animated Love Hina story there is.
Tokyo Godfathers is a movie but it is a Christmas movie (although watchable at anytime) and is my second favorite Satoshi Kon feature.
Kamichu! has a mini Christmas storyline that is wonderful. If you don't know what the show's about it's about a timid Jr. High girl who suddenly becomes a Shinto Kami (god/spirit), one of her frienRAB is a priestess who is always trying to attract people to her family's shrine and decides to counter-program against Christmas and hold a festival in her friend's honor.
Tokyo Marble Chocolate is a wonderful OVA that takes place on Christmas. A love story of two people unlucky in love... and a mini donkey. Pretty much win right there.
Until the last two minutes, then it goes back to the crap that made the TV series so damn annoying.
Hayate no Gotoku's first episode was great and revolved around Christmas. The ominous interpretation of Santa Claus is one of the best parts of it, and for some reason keeps finding ways to continue being a part of the show. o.o
One of my favorite Christmas specials of all time, actually. All of the heartwarming of a traditional Christmas special, outright stating the point of the holiday even if it is a proxy, and, of course, Big O badass through the roof.
Agreed! I've already seen this but this is an excellent Christmas movie and in my opinion, quietly bold as well. There just aren't many films ANYWHERE (Hollywood, foreign, indie or otherwise) that focus on the homeless, and do it in a non-depressing, entertaining manner while still making perceptive social statements. It's a pressing reality in every nation that seems to get whitewashed by everyone.
Tenchi Muyo Manatsu No Eve (Child of Darkness) has Christmas as a major plot point.
Uresei Yatsura had a XMAS episode that had a nice ending for Ataru and Lum (to the theme of Silent Night).
The Trapp Family Story had a Christmas two-parter, where the servants dressed up as St. Nicholas and a Reindeer straight out of Hades for the children.
Endless Waltz is my Christmas tradition. I got it before completing the entire series on DVD, and I've been watching it on Christmas for the past several years, eventually tying it in with an annual marathon session of Wing.
As for the OVA/Movie itself, it's a fitting Christmas movie, and it's more than just "It occurs on Christmas". I wonder if there's an AMV of it featuring "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)"...
