Benzoyl Peroxide confusion

I've tried Clean and Clear's Persa-Gel with minimal results. I've tried Oxy's BP lotion with also very low results. The one BP product that has "worked" for me is Panoxyl's BP Gel. It keeps my face pretty clear, but unfortunately it really irritates my skin. Even if I use it only at night, no matter how much I moisturize, my skin peels and feels burnt and itchy. All the BP listed are 5% strength; I know 2.5% is better, but living in a small town reduces my selection.

I don't understand why one would do nothing and the other dry my skin to an extreme, both being 5%. Is there a solution to this? Am I allergic in some way to BP? Should I dillute the Panoxyl in water?

Now Im confused also - how is 2.5% better than 5%?

Also, has anyone tried Clearasil 10% BP Acne Vanishing Cream OR Benzaclin (prescribe by doctor)?

Studies have shown that 2.5% works as well as 5% and 10% benzoyl peroxide but without the added irritation. In my experience I am not sure whether that is the case, I think 10% works better for me but is definitely more irritating. They don't seem to sell anything with 5% where I live.

So has anyone tried Clearasil 10% vanishing acne cream or Benzaclin? Benzaclin is prescribed by doctor only.

Have you compared the "inactive ingredients" between the products? Two acne products could have the same active ingredient i.e. benzoyl peroxide and in the same strength, but the other stuff could be different, perhaps there is something in the panoxyl that is more irritating to your skin type. I have noticed the same thing though, the products that are more irritating seem to work better for me.

A question I have is, would using peroxide from the bottle be harmful to your skin?

I tried it - for me it did not help much because if I used more than 1 application per day my skin turned red and peeled! 1 application a day did not clear it up any faster than other products, and the redness lasted for days so even when the pimple was gone the peeling/redness still was. I wouldn't reccommend it.
I have a derm appt today for this and hair loss- it she has any wonderful suggestions I'll post them.

Tandjsmom:

You tried the Clearasil or the Benzaclin and had the redness and peeling?

I tried the clearsil. Today the derm gave me samples for duac, I'll try it tonight and post in a few days. She told me to give it 4-6 weeks though.

I have used the duac 1x, and already see improvement this am. I just hope it doesn't cause a huge breakout in a few days/weeks.
